What is a LASER?

LASER means amplification of stimulation emission of radiation. Light waves of lasers are monochromatic, coherent, collimated. These waves are absorbed by certain substances which are called as chromophore. Haemoglobin, melanin & water are chromophore in the body. So, laser waves selectively act only on the cells which contain these chromophores. Laser waves do not act on other cells. Thus, Lasers are the target specific & precise in action. When laser waves are absorbed, target cells respond by photochemical, photothermal & photomechanical action. Each laser wave has specific wavelength. Lasers are increasingly used for mild, minor surgical procedures and also for aggressive surgical procedures because these produce high quality results. Healing is fast. CO2 Laser

Super / ultra pulse CO2 laser machine is work horse of lasers. By changes in fluence and pulse duration, it works like Erbium laser. It is latest breakthrough.

CO2 laser cuts by no touch technique: It provides minimum scarring and minimum bleeding. It has shorter healing time as it destroys local nerve endings. Post operative pain is minimum or absent.

Long pulsed 1064 Nd: YAG LASER:

Q-switch YAG laser machine produces high energy with precise focusing which can penetrates only the pathologically changed tissue with high energy. This laser does not damage surrounding normal tissue. This, instant laser energy is delivered for few nanoseconds. This is selectively absorbed by pigment in the skin layers through the surface in a period of nanosecond effectively. These pigment particles are crushed into very tiny particles which are later swallowed by surrounding cells and eventually pigmented lesion fades gradually with each round of treatment increases. What are instructions before treatment?
Do not take laser treatment if you are recently exposed to excess sunlight.
In dark skin person, bleaching regiment may be given four weeks before the treatment. Stop bleaching, plucking, threading, tweezing and use of depilatory cream two weeks before the treatment.
If you have skin infection, get it treated.
Shaving of hair prior to treatment reduces the treatment time and discomfort. Some people have misconcept that shaving promotes hair growth. As such shaving has no relation with growth of hair because we cut dead hair shaft which are outside the hair follicle and does not deal with actual root of hair in the skin.

What are post treatment instructions?
After the treatment, one may develop redness or bumps. These are treated with cold compress.
Moisturizer and make up may be used.
Use sun block of SPF 25 or more for two weeks.
Hair will continue to shed off upto 3 weeks after the treatment. So, when hairs just come out, you may feel as if new hairs are growing. You may wash them off.

What is structure of hair? How it grows?
Hairs grows from a pouch like structure below the skin called a hair follicle. Part of hair out side on the surface of the skin is called shaft of hair which is not sensitive and is made up of keratinized hard tissue. In hair follicle sebaceous glands open. Hair becomes erect by a muscle called erector pill. Growth of hair is affected by age of the person level of different hormones, metabolism, use of medications, weight etc.
85% hairs are in active phase of growth (anagen phase). They have abundant melanin. These phase lasts for few years. Hairs in this phase can be removed with lasers.
Some hairs (5%) are in regressive phase (catagen phase) which lasts for few weeks. These hairs do not grow and do not respond to lasers. So, the hair in these two last phases needs treatment after certain interval. Very few persons have hormonal disturbances and some other problems. They may need maintainance dose of laser later on.
